The Ecole Viscount Alexander School Ground Transformation Committee
Inviting our Students and our Community Outdoors
The idea of an outdoor classroom is hardly a new one. With books like The Last Child in the Woods and Asphalt to Ecosystems it is clear that there is a ever increasing desire, in our technological era, to get back to nature, to get active and to get outdoors.
Our committee at present is a group of enthusiastic staff and parents who are listening to what our kids want and dreaming even larger for our community. Prairie grasses, colourful landscaping, seating areas and a fitness circuit of hills, logs, rocks and tires. There is plenty of room on our school grounds for all this while still maintaining a full sized soccer/football/rugby or ultimate field to support organized sports.
Shade has been an element that is often mentioned. What do others feel is missing? We have gathered ideas from people who move through this space, and are working towards create an outdoor space that works for our kids and our community. Watch for updates on this site.
East Fort Garry is a beautiful neighbourhood and we want to keep our kids outdoors and enjoying it.
Thank you for your help and support.

School Ground Transformation Committee
SGTC plan and progress
The proposed plan for the grounds is on our bulletin board near the school office. It is too large and detailed to post online, so we invite you to drop by the school to examine it. SGTC has held community events in spring where parents and neighbours can come to the school for a close-up look at the plans and to meet committee members and the school division's Evergreen consultant. Other events have involved a reception for representatives of grant funding agencies and planting events involving students.
The goals and past activities of the SGTC are detailed in the SGTC handbook.
SGTC Activities 2015-16
SGTC no longer meets regularly as a separate committee (as of December 2014) but continues its work led by Chris Lepa. Developments will be reported to the monthly PAC meeting. Work on grant application and tree planting continues, and a spring community event to thank funders and review progress was held in spring 2015. On June 20, 2016 an assembly and tree planting was held to thank the donors and contributors from the PTSD, the City, and Province and to honour the contributions to SGTC made by former members Signy Kuch, Carol Steel, Sharon Simon, Carla Brenan, and Chris Lepa.
